MPR Collaborator Protea Biosciences Wins "Top Ten Innovations of 2011" Award  
 
Alexandria, VA February 9, 2012 -  MPR Associates is pleased to announce that Protea Biosciences has
received a Top Ten Innovations of 2011 award from international life sciences research journal, The Scientist. Protea received the award for the development of the LAESI DP-1000 direct ionization system based on the Laser Ablation Electrospray Ionization (LAESI) technology licensed from George Washington University and designed for manufacturing by MPR Product Development.  MPR used its 'first principles' approach as a foundation while effectively integrating the end user's needs, the industrial design and the technical requirements throughout development of the LAESI DP-1000.

 

LAESI has been described as the world's first technology that allows real-time molecular imaging, including the molecular analysis of live cells. "What we believe makes the LAESI DP-1000 unique is that it is a universal platform -- one that can be used to analyze all types of biological samples, including tissue
biopsies, live cells, blood and other biofluids," said Protea CEO Steve Turner. "It allows the direct, molecular analysis of living cells."

 

Ralph Paul, MPR's project manager for development of the LAESI DP-1000, attributes the success of this technology development to the close collaboration between Protea Biosciences, the laboratory of Dr. Akos Vertes, Ph.D. (where the technology was invented), and MPR Associates.  "MPR's multi-disciplined team worked as an extension to Protea Biosciences' organization, working very closely with the technology
inventors and end users to ensure that the technology was properly translated from the laboratory to a
commercial product," said Mr. Paul.    

 

The Scientist received more than 65 entries for the Top Ten Innovations contest, which it said has become "a showcase of the coolest life science tools to emerge in the previous year."
